i wasn’t sure what the new year would bring, but i knew i liked someone a lot. i broke down and told him everything, everything i was feeling and ever felt, and he said he could not reciprocate. i met someone new who seemed nice enough, but ultimately, didn’t feel enough for. he told me he loved me. i told him i didn’t feel the same. someone who had always been in the background came sharply into focus. he told me he loved me. i told him i felt the same. it wasn’t enough.

so that was february. a month of bad judgments and doing shameful, shameful things to avoid being in my apartment where mice have moved in. i’m not able to cook. i’m lying constantly. i’m allowing myself to be mistreated and also mistreating others.

and giving cpr to old flings is the most pointless thing anyone can do.

so i asked this guy that i’ve been running into if he wanted to hang out on saturday. and when i said hang out, i meant get a drink and shoot some pool. but once he suggested dinner, i knew i was in uncharted date waters. and then when he suggested we go to moto, i knew i was in big trouble. after all, moto is cursed, and i rarely go there because of bad memories. i was once broken up with there in ’06, and it wasn’t pretty. anyway, the night did turn out to be rather date-like, but i had a nice time (the moto curse is broken!). at the end of our meal, he insisted on dessert, and it was called the date cake. it was the best cake i ever had, but will i ever have another one?

ok, so it’s only slightly less pretentious than it sounds, and if it were any less pretentious, it would be called ’8-minute hipster speed dating”. i went tonight, and i have to admit, it was fun. the theme this month was “saddest songs in the world”, which of course i ate right up. the mix i got included “metal heart” by cat power and a selection from beck’s sea change, both of which i had on my mix. it was a match made in indie heaven…that is, until i found out the guy who made it was named devin. i knew it could never work. but he obviously knows his music. as we all do.

i lost the bodega challenge. there was a live judging (which was entertaining, unless you were one of the contestants), and i got lukewarm comments:

i would have liked it to be more spicy…
this could be good….if the ingredients hadn’t come from a bodega….
i like it….it would go well with turkey….

needless to say, i was rather disappointed, but I WAS SICK! okay, i’m not going to make any more excuses. i did, however, meet a boy at the challenge, and we are now in a hanging out situation, which really is the only way things turn out in williamsburg. whatever, i have a CHILI COOK-OFF to prepare for and a title to defend! i made my test-batch last night, and it was good, but i really can’t say how it will do. i brought it into work and obligated a few of my co-workers to critique it, and while a couple people liked it, only one person LOVED it. oh, i just can’t predict how it will all turn out. i can guarantee you that i will be throwing A FIT if i don’t place in the top 3 though.

i’m not too excited about the bodega challenge tomorrow, mainly because i’m still pretty sick with a cold. i did manage to come up with a decent entry though, i think. not sure if it’s a winner, but it’s all i can do right now. i like it!

Spoonbread Fever

2 cups fiesta corn
2 tbsp butter
2 cups milk
2/3 cup cornmeal
1 cup cabot extra sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup boar’s head pepper jack cheese
4 eggs, separated
1 1/2 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Coat casserole dish with 1 tbsp butter.
Combine, milk, butter, corn, cornmeal, and salt. Bring to a boil, and simmer until mixture is thickened.
Stir in cheese, followed by egg yolks.
Beat egg whites and add into cornmeal mixture. Pour into dish.
Bake at 375 for 40-50 minutes.

williamsburg’s best kept secrets

since i was kind of down on the ‘burg in my last post, i thought i’d point out some of the good. the BEST KEPT SECRETS, in fact.

1. the cheese department at key food grand st. such an amazing selection, without the pretension of bedford cheese shoppe (which really doesn’t have anything you’d want anyway). great prices and very nice fontina.

2. siam orchid. of all the thai places to choose from in williamsburg, this is the best. good mainly for take-out. you can eat there too, but there’s only a couple tables and they don’t serve booze. the staff is friendly, the food is hot. it’s all about the vegetarian duck.

3. san loco. for the pool, of course. the back pool area is always empty, the table aint bad, and it costs 50 CENTS A GAME!!!!

thanks to all the good press new york magazine has given this southside sandwich shoppe in recent weeks, i decided to try it. i ordered some kind of lox and cream cheese sandwich, which was listed first on their menu, which means it’s the reliably good choice, right? WRONG. the bread was stale. there was barely a spread of cream cheese on it. the tomatoes were sliced all funny and scattered about. same for the lox, if there was any. they were out of cucumbers. sure there were capers, but at the end of it all, i basically ate a bad red onion sandwich. really REALLY disappointing. for $11, you might as well go to dumont for their lox platter, which is cheaper and always very satisfying (although this past weekend, the bagel was cold….) oh, williamsburg, get your act together!
an $11 sandwich in williamsburg. may i suggest an asshole ex-boyfriend to go with that?

the bottom line: go to the cafe at marlow and sons.
